It's official: No 12-inch Mac laptop is coming

I'm sure I'm not the first to note this, but it's official: Apple won't release a MacBook Pro successor to its slick 12-inch PowerBook subnotebook.

Apple's Web site says as much with the "meet the family, now complete" wording above a picture of its laptops in a tidy row.

If you have any lingering doubt, the company just told me on the telephone that a 12-inch MacBook Pro ain't gonna happen.

That's bad news for those who love the diminutive PowerBook and don't regard the slightly bigger MacBooks as acceptable successors. Sorry.

But the high-end MacBook with its matte-black finish looks studly in a work setting, dontchathink?
